steel
SK85 is a high-carbon tool steel known for its excellent hardness, edge retention, and wear resistance. With approximately 0.85% carbon content, it offers strong cutting performance and durability, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications like survival, camping, and hunting knives. When properly heat-treated, SK85 provides a good balance of toughness and strength, making it a reliable and cost-effective choice for high-performance blades.
Knife care
Knife Care Instructions for SK85 Steel
SK85 is a high-carbon tool steel, prized for its edge retention and toughness—but like all high-carbon steels, it requires proper care to prevent rust and maintain performance. Follow these steps to keep your knife in top shape:
-
Keep it Dry
After each use, especially in humid or wet environments, wipe the blade dry thoroughly. SK85 is not stainless and will rust if moisture is left on the surface. -
Oil Regularly
Apply a light coat of oil (e.g., mineral oil or any food-safe blade oil) to the blade after cleaning. This creates a protective barrier against corrosion. -
Clean After Use
Wash the blade with mild soap and warm water after heavy use. Avoid harsh chemicals or dishwashers. Dry it immediately after cleaning. -
Store Properly
Store in a dry place. If the knife comes with a sheath, ensure the blade is dry before putting it back. Avoid long-term storage in leather sheaths, as they can retain moisture. -
Sharpen as Needed
SK85 holds an edge well, but regular stropping or occasional sharpening will keep your knife performing at its best. Use a whetstone or sharpening system suitable for high-carbon steels.
